What We Liked
#1 - The character mashups
#2 - Stark, Spidey, and" the wizards” fight off Thanos’ goons in New York
#3 - The one-liners
- “Dude, you’re embarrassing me in front of the wizards.”
- “Why is Gamora?”
- “I am Steve Rogers”
#4 - "Magic with a kick!"
#5 - Thanos establishing himself as a the superest of supervillains
What We Didn't Love so Much
#1 - Stark’s new Blue Beetle suit...I mean...his new nanotech Iron Man suit...
#2 - Cap’s general lack of a role in the film...and his silly gauntlet things
#3 - The TOTAL LACK OF OR EVEN RECOGNITION OF KORG OR VALKYRIE!
#4 - Thanos’s “big plan” is utter nonsense
#5 - The Siege of Wakanda
The invasion of Wakanda didn’t look bad in any way, it just wasn’t . . . interesting. The heroes could have established plans, laid traps, and coordinated fallback points all Magnificent 7 style to increase tension, but it all just sort of happened. In a field. Compared to the narrative tension of the Helm’s Deep siege or the cinematic immersion used for Game of Thrones’ Battle of the Bastards, the Wakanda battle is just rather unmemorable. How cool would it have been to follow Cap in a long, over-the-shoulder camera shot as he navigates the battlefield, rescuing and being rescued by his team of superheroes ? Such a shot would place us in the midst of the battle, letting us as viewers experience not just the overwhelming odds being faced, but also the interwoven skill of the heroes facing it. Rather, we experience it in broken segments - there are cool moments, sure (Bucky holding and spinning Rocket stands out among them), but the product as a whole lacks narrative weight and cinematic luster.
